Some parents at a Liverpool school are expressing frustration over a recent uniform policy change that prohibits girls from wearing socks with skirts. The King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool in Dingle has implemented these new rules to ensure a more consistent appearance throughout the school. Under the updated policy, girls wearing skirts are now required to wear black tights or tailored school trousers instead of socks. Additionally, girls must keep their hair tied back at all times.
The decision has sparked discontent among some parents, with one social media user questioning the rationale behind the rule, stating that it limits the parts of the body girls can expose. Another parent mentioned that their child dislikes wearing tights and will not adhere to the new requirement.
In response to the backlash, Scott Cordon, the Principal of King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool, defended the policy, emphasizing the school’s aim to establish a professional and uniform look across the student body. Student representatives from the school’s Student Parliament supported the changes, stating that uniform rules contribute to a professional learning environment where all students feel unified.
The students explained that the uniform adjustments are intended to clarify expectations and promote consistency. They highlighted that wearing plain black tights or tailored school trousers gives families flexibility while maintaining the school’s uniform standards, ultimately fostering a professional and cohesive appearance.
Regarding the requirement for tied-back hair, the school emphasized professionalism and safety, noting that this practice ensures a neat appearance, especially during practical lessons where safety is paramount.
Student representatives reiterated the importance of maintaining a professional demeanor through uniforms, stating that tights enhance presentation and tied-back hair promotes professionalism and safety. They believe these changes enhance the school’s professional image and uphold its values.
The student statement emphasized that clear and consistent uniform standards reduce confusion, promote fairness, and enable students to focus on learning, leadership, and achievement, preparing them for future success.
King’s Leadership Academy, part of the Great Schools Trust, was recognized as one of the most improved schools in the country last year.
