Renowned wildlife presenter Chris Packham has issued a pressing call to supermarkets to halt the inhumane practice of culling male chicks in the egg industry, questioning the delay in taking action.
Packham, along with celebrities such as Dame Joanna Lumley and Brian Cox, signed a letter urging major retailers to address the issue of 45 million male chicks being euthanized annually in the UK due to their inability to lay eggs or serve as meat. Despite growing public awareness, male chick culling remains prevalent.
Describing the culling as both wasteful and cruel, Packham emphasized that this practice should have no place in the UK, citing that other countries have already adopted more humane alternatives while the UK lags behind. He called on the egg industry and retailers to heed public sentiment and promptly end male chick culling.
Support for this cause, spearheaded by the Vegetarian Society, also includes public figures like Sadie Frost, author Cathy Caddidy, and comedian Dave Spikey. The society’s Ban Hatch and Dispatch petition has garnered over 40,000 signatures, including support from more than 100 politicians.
The RSPCA has advocated for alternatives to culling, such as in-ovo sexing, raising male chicks for meat, and utilizing dual-purpose breeds to prevent the mass euthanasia of day-old males.
Jenny Canham, leading Public Affairs at the Vegetarian Society, highlighted the crucial role of retailers in ending male chick culling, given widespread public support for this cause. Canham emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated effort involving industry and government to phase out male chick culling in the UK.
A joint letter signed by 11 celebrities has been dispatched to executives at major retailers like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Morrisons, and Lidl, urging them to reconsider their stance on male chick culling. While the practice was previously defended as necessary for feeding captive reptiles, recent research has identified viable alternatives.
