“Buck Martinez to be Inducted into Blue Jays Hall of Excellence”

The Toronto Blue Jays will honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after calling over 4,000 games, dedicated nearly four decades to the organization as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his surprise at the recognition, Martinez shared his gratitude to CBC Radio’s Metro Morning on Friday, acknowledging the Jays fans for their warm reception over the years, making him feel like part of their extended family. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style, including iconic phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez revealed that his signature lines evolved during his return to Toronto in 2010, drawing inspiration from his time in Milwaukee.

Reflecting on his transition to retirement after a lifelong involvement in professional baseball, Martinez highlighted the significant change of not participating in spring training for the first time since 1967 due to health reasons. Despite intending to be part of the Jays’ 50th season festivities, Martinez had to step away in light of battling cancer for the second time in 2025, following an initial diagnosis in 2022. However, he happily reported being cancer-free and in good health.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will showcase an exhibit honoring pivotal figures like players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters who have shaped the franchise. Notably, the current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence roster, including Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, and Joe Carter, will also be featured.

Martinez, who initially viewed his move to Toronto in 1981 as an “exile” from previous teams like the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers, soon recognized the city’s passion for baseball and embraced its unique appeal. Recalling the excitement of last year’s World Series, particularly the thrilling Game 7 and the cohesive team dynamics, Martinez praised the memorable experience.

Sharing his observations on current Jays performances, Martinez acknowledged the challenges faced by standout players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., emphasizing the game’s inherent difficulty even for top-tier athletes.
