Atari, known for its iconic video games from the 1980s, has teamed up with Activision to reintroduce 39 classic games from the early days of the latter company. This announcement was made at the recent Gamescom event in Germany.
The new releases will be available on physical cartridges and can be played on the Atari 2600+, a modern version of the original Atari 2600 console. Launched in 1977, the 2600+ supports wireless joysticks and can connect to modern TVs via HDMI.
In 2023, Atari released the 2600+ along with revamped versions of popular games like Pac-Man, Galaga, and Dig Dug. These new editions are compatible with original cartridges for the Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles. Additionally, they are backward compatible, allowing them to be played on the original consoles if they are still functional.
Mike Mika, studio head at Digital Eclipse, a subsidiary of Atari, highlighted the enduring popularity of these classic games and the nostalgia they evoke. The collaboration with Activision holds special significance as it marks a reunion after more than 40 years. Activision was founded by former Atari programmers who disagreed with the company’s policies in the late 1970s.
Atari, which has seen various ownership changes over the years, is now owned by Atari SA. In recent years, the company has made efforts to revitalize its brand by focusing on retro gaming and distancing itself from controversial ventures such as gambling and blockchain initiatives.
The brand’s resurgence has involved acquiring studios like Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse, launching new hardware like the Atari 2600+, and reconnecting with retro gaming enthusiasts. The company’s emphasis on physical media and the nostalgia associated with classic cartridges has resonated with a niche audience in the gaming market.
