Families of the victims impacted by the actions of Robert Bush, a funeral director described as a “monster,” expressed outrage following the sentencing that handed him a 20-year prison term for his crimes.
Bush, aged 48 and the proprietor of Legacy Independent Funeral Services in Hull, East Yorkshire, neglected bodies in his mortuary, including those of a miscarried baby, and provided incorrect ashes to grieving families while deceiving other clients to support a lavish lifestyle. He admitted to 67 offenses over 12 years, including 30 charges of obstructing proper burials affecting numerous families, and received a 20-year sentence for abusing their trust “on a massive scale.”
Outraged relatives criticized the sentence as “appalling” and a “farce” after authorities uncovered 35 bodies and 500 kilograms of ashes at his residence, with more potential victims feared.
During the trial at Hull Crown Court, it was revealed that Bush defrauded nearly 200 families of £500,000 out of “financial greed,” mishandling remains and providing the wrong ashes to families. Judge Mr. Justice Hilliard, in his sentencing, noted that Bush had caused immeasurable pain and suffering.
The judge also highlighted that unless bodies were identified among those recovered by the police during a 2024 raid on Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, individuals who utilized the service may not be certain about receiving their loved one’s ashes.
Police successfully identified the remains retrieved during the raid, with up to 300 individuals being among Bush’s victims.

The court heard that 46 individuals cremated between 2017 and 2024 were provided with incorrect ashes, while 11 families did not receive any ashes. Additionally, 226 pensioners reported being deceived out of their savings through fake funeral plans sold by Bush.
Bush confessed to numerous charges, including 30 counts of obstructing lawful burials and 30 counts of fraudulent activities linked to the found bodies, as well as other fraudulent actions. The judge expressed astonishment at the scale of the offenses and Bush’s callous behavior towards both the living and the deceased.
The judge emphasized the profound impact of Bush’s actions and highlighted the lack of closure for the victims’ families, who were deeply affected by his deceitful practices.
Following the sentencing, families expressed their disappointment with the sentence, with some stating that the term was inadequate considering the scale of the harm caused by Bush’s actions. They emphasized the need for justice and closure in the wake of the traumatic events.
In response to the case, the Government pledged to introduce formal regulations in the funeral sector to prevent such incidents in the future, with the Department for Health and Social Care announcing plans for enhanced oversight and regulation following the disturbing revelations in Hull.
