Survivors from a harrowing plane landing incident in Prince George, B.C., which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, are recounting their experiences. Jaime Pawliuk, who was driving to work when the incident occurred, described the plane rapidly approaching him. He narrowly avoided a direct collision but sustained superficial cuts and glass showering when the plane sheared the top of his vehicle.
The emergency landing involving a Beech King Air 200 aircraft took place on Foothills Boulevard, causing Pawliuk and others to abandon their vehicles during the ongoing investigation. Subsequently, damaged vehicles were removed from the scene by flatbed trucks.
Witnesses like Mohit Arora shared accounts of the plane colliding with multiple vehicles, including a pickup truck with debris through the windshield. Another vehicle, a yellow car, had its roof damaged by propeller blades, but its occupants escaped unscathed.
The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) reported that the aircraft, departing from Sturdee Airstrip, encountered engine failure, leading to the emergency landing. The plane, registered to Sekani Air Ltd., had no reported injuries among its passengers and crew.
Following the incident, ten individuals were assessed for injuries, with two being hospitalized in stable condition and one fatality confirmed among the vehicle occupants struck by the plane. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the emergency landing.
Former TSB investigator Bill Yearwood highlighted the challenging decisions pilots face during emergencies, emphasizing the limited options available in such situations. The road where the incident occurred has since reopened, with the plane undergoing assessment before complete removal from the scene.
Despite surviving the ordeal, Pawliuk expressed shock and disbelief, emphasizing his gratitude for escaping with his life while mourning the loss of the deceased victim. The community awaits further information as investigations into the tragic event continue.
