An individual born in Edmonton, who had been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for nine months, has returned to Canada and is now recounting his detention experience. Curtis Wright, aged 40, a long-time U.S. resident, was detained in Texas by ICE following a business trip to Mexico in November. He was held due to a minor drug possession charge dating back to when he was 17.
Motivated by the desire to be with his two young sons in Texas, aged 8 and 11, from a previous marriage, Wright fought to remain in the U.S. However, he was deported to Canada in mid-August. Currently, he is staying at his parents’ home in Kelowna, B.C., with his fiancée and their two-year-old daughter.
In an interview with “Edmonton AM,” Wright discussed the difficulties he encountered while striving to stay in the U.S. This interview, edited for brevity and clarity, shed light on his challenging journey through the ICE detention process.
When he returned to Texas from Mexico, Wright was subjected to intense questioning and subsequently detained by ICE officials. Despite having over 100 prior entries into the U.S., he was shocked by the detention due to a past misdemeanor charge. He faced numerous delays in court proceedings and ultimately lost his case, leading to his deportation to Canada.
Throughout his detention, Wright experienced deplorable conditions, including poor hygiene, inadequate food, and mistreatment by security officers. He described the psychological and emotional toll of being confined in a harsh environment designed to coerce detainees into giving up their legal battles.
After months of legal battles, Wright made the difficult decision to accept deportation to Canada for the sake of his family. Now back in his home country, he plans to resume his career in the oil and gas industry, with the support of his employer and family in Edmonton.
Wright’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals caught in the complex immigration system and the human toll of prolonged detention and legal battles.
