NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, a Hamilton native who previously played for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League. Mayich, aged 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
According to his player profile, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before transitioning to the 67’s. Reports suggest that he was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the 2026-27 season in Arizona.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery. Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, stated that a student from the hockey team collapsed during a morning outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident without disclosing the student’s identity.
Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, conveyed the organization’s concern for Mayich’s well-being and wished for his speedy recovery during his medical treatment in Arizona. OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford also extended thoughts and support to Mayich, his parents, and his entire family.
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly the Huskies, previously congratulated Mayich when he joined the ’67s in 2021 and when he was selected by the Blues in 2023. Mayich, who had been associated with the Huskies since the age of nine, has garnered respect within the Ontario Hockey League for his four seasons of play.
The entire hockey community, including the Ontario Hockey League and the St. Louis Blues, is rallying around Mayich and his loved ones during this challenging time.
