A recent study has confirmed that Canada’s only remaining epishelf lake, characterized by freshwater floating on saltwater, has disappeared, along with the unique ecosystem it sustained. Lead author Jérémie Bonneau, an assistant professor at Laval University in Quebec City, expressed sadness over the loss of the Milne Fiord epishelf lake on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, describing it as the last of its kind in Canada.
The vanishing of this once common natural phenomenon underscores the impact of a warming climate on the Arctic. While the demise of the lake had been previously reported, a new study recently published in the journal Scientific Reports offers detailed insights into the lake’s disappearance, stating that its irreversible loss signifies a significant shift and the end of a 4000-year era.
Epishelf lakes form due to the accumulation of freshwater on top of saltwater, separated by a damming effect created by ice shelves. The Milne Fiord epishelf lake, connected to the ocean by an under-ice channel in the ice shelf, had been accumulating freshwater for over 4,000 years. The lake, with a freshwater layer 18 meters deep in 1983, hosted distinct freshwater and saltwater communities, showcasing two unique ecosystems within the same water column.
The study also highlighted the influence of the lake on its surroundings, as it nourished a thriving ecosystem beneath the ice shelf. However, the collapse of the Milne Ice Shelf in 2020 led to the lake’s disappearance, with the freshwater draining and mixing with seawater, resulting in the immediate loss of freshwater organisms.
The researchers observed the rapid drainage of freshwater from the fiord following the ice shelf’s breakup, leading to a transformation of the marine environment. While epishelf lakes no longer exist in Canada, similar ecosystems persist in Greenland and Antarctica, though their future remains uncertain due to environmental changes.
