After receiving feedback, the Canadian government has removed U.S. fish and seafood products from the list of counter-tariffed items. The move came in response to the U.S. imposing new tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods following failed trade talks. The initial list included seafood products taxed at a 25% rate.
Industry leaders in Canada’s East Coast seafood sector expressed relief over the removal of the tariffs, as they feared the potential devastating impact on the industry. The integration of the seafood industry across the border, particularly in lobster processing, made the tariffs economically unfeasible for Canadian operations.
Outside of lobster, nearly all seafood items imported by Canada were on the retaliatory tariff list, raising concerns about broader industry repercussions. The possibility of new tit-for-tat tariffs from the U.S. side was a major worry for industry representatives.
While the tariffs on seafood were dropped, the Canadian government reiterated its commitment to maintaining a proportional response to U.S. products. Additional items, including copper wire and charcoal, will face 50% tariffs starting September 8 to uphold the dollar-for-dollar impact.
Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne emphasized that the decision to remove seafood from the tariff list was made in the best interests of Canada after considering feedback from Canadians. The government’s move aims to protect Canadian industries while maintaining a balanced approach in response to trade disputes.
