Summer McIntosh clinched her first-ever gold medal at the Pan Pacific swimming competition by setting a championship record time in the women’s 400-metre individual medley in Irvine, California. She outpaced Australia’s Jenna Forrester, finishing the race in four minutes and 28.01 seconds. This victory also marked a new record, surpassing the previous mark held by American Elizabeth Beisel since 2014.
McIntosh expressed her satisfaction with the win, acknowledging that she believed she could have performed even better. Despite feeling some discomfort towards the end of the race, she was pleased to bring home the gold for Canada.
Following her individual triumph, McIntosh contributed to Canada’s success in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay. The team secured a bronze medal with a time of 7:52.74, trailing behind Australia and the United States.
The Canadian swimmer’s performance was well-received by the audience, especially a group of enthusiastic young fans who cheered her on during the medal ceremony. McIntosh also highlighted the joy of competing in relay races, emphasizing the team effort required for success.
In other events, Tristan Jankovics and Lorne Wigginton represented Canada in the men’s 400 IM, finishing in the seventh and eighth positions. Meanwhile, Taylor Ruck achieved a fifth-place finish in the women’s 100 free event.
The competition also saw strong performances from other Canadian swimmers, including Alexanne Lepage and Sophie Angus, who showcased impressive skills in the women’s 100 breaststroke.
