A 14-year-old boy identified as Banta Sillah tragically passed away after entering a London dock, where he was known as a skilled football player and well-liked teenager. The incident occurred at Millwall Outer Dock on Monday evening, prompting emergency services to respond at 6:48pm. The Metropolitan Police recovered the boy from the water around 10:30pm and unfortunately pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Witnesses, including heartbroken parents with young children, were seen grieving and leaving floral tributes at the site. Local residents also came to show their respects for the young boy.
Lutfar Rahman, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, expressed deep sorrow over Banta Sillah’s untimely death, highlighting his talent as a footballer for Frontline Community FC. Rahman emphasized the need for caution around open water and extended condolences to the boy’s family, friends, and teammates.
Authorities confirmed that the incident is not considered suspicious, and the case has been referred to the coroner for further investigation. Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter issued a cautionary statement, reminding the public about the dangers of swimming in unsupervised waters, especially as warm weather persists.
Following this tragic event, a total of 43 fatalities have been reported in open water since mid-May.
