A popular social media figure hailing from Mexico met a tragic end during a live broadcast on a public street in daylight. Cesar Gastelum, known for his comedic content on TikTok and boasting a sizable following of 600,000, was fatally shot while streaming outside a fast-food establishment in Culiacan. The fatal incident unfolded as two individuals wearing helmets arrived on a motorcycle, targeting Gastelum and his companions with gunfire, with one assailant seen aiming directly at Gastelum’s head in the live video.
Culiacán, situated in Sinaloa, Mexico, stands as a hub for drug cartel operations, specifically the Sinaloa Cartel, where clashes between rival factions have fueled a surge in violence. A security official in Sinaloa confirmed Gastelum’s demise and highlighted the initiation of a substantial security response to the incident.
The escalation of violence in Sinaloa traces back to the 2024 abduction of Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada by a son of former cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Zambada was later surrendered to US authorities, leading to internal strife within the cartel between Zambada’s faction and Guzmán’s sons.
Following the surge in violence, US President Donald Trump classified the Sinaloa Cartel, among others, as a foreign terrorist organization. The tragic killing of influencer Cesar Gastelum draws parallels to the 2025 slaying of fellow Mexican social media personality Valeria Marquez, who was gunned down during a TikTok livestream at her workplace in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Marquez, aged 23, fell victim to a shooting carried out by an intruder at the salon, as per investigators. In another development, Mexican authorities disclosed the arrest of Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” in Jalisco, identifying him as the leader of a criminal group affiliated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Alvarez Ayala has been implicated in Marquez’s murder and stands accused of orchestrating and bankrolling the assassination of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo in November 2025.
