A man, known as the ‘Grim Reaper,’ received a fine after he climbed onto a hospital roof to frighten visitors. Leon Gillespie, 26, admitted to causing a disturbance without a valid reason at an NHS facility and was fined £200 by Llandudno Magistrates. Dressed in a ‘Grim Reaper’ costume, he climbed onto the hospital roof, alarming both staff and visitors.
Gillespie was spotted wielding a long blade and creating commotion on top of the hospital building. Clad in a black ensemble that he later claimed was a crow outfit, he surprised hospital visitors by appearing as a mysterious figure above Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital in St Asaph, Denbighshire on June 6.
Authorities were alerted to the situation, leading to the dispatch of four police cars and fire service vehicles to the hospital. After a while, they successfully brought him down. Reports indicated that a man dressed entirely in black was perched over the hospital entrance. Gillespie did not provide an explanation for his unsettling actions.
In addition to the hospital incident, Gillespie was implicated in thefts at local establishments. He stole £30 to £40 worth of cat supplies from a Pets at Home store on March 26 and food and beverages from a Sainsbury’s in Llandudno on May 28. As a consequence, he was required to pay fines totaling £100, cover £100 in Crown Prosecution Service costs, and provide £50 in compensation.
A representative from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board emphasized their firm stance against any form of abuse, aggression, or disturbance within their hospital premises.
Following the incident, a spokesperson for North Wales Police explained that Gillespie was charged for causing a disturbance at the hospital without a valid reason and for refusing to leave when asked by law enforcement.
