Parliament’s ethics overseer had barely initiated a new inquiry into the Reform party when Nigel Farage swiftly turned attention away from it. Shortly after deputy leader Richard Tice came under scrutiny for undisclosed interests, Farage introduced Operation Fortress. This operation proposed sending the Royal Navy to the Channel to forcibly return small boat migrants to France, garnering significant media coverage and diverting attention from Reform’s uncomfortable queries.
The naval display was a strategic maneuver to deflect scrutiny, disguising an old proposal as urgent action. A similar idea was suggested by Reform in January 2025 but lacked practical details then as it does now. Criticism from former Royal Navy commander Tom Sharpe highlighted the impracticality of the plan, citing the Navy’s lack of suitable vessels and the inappropriate diversion of costly warships meant for defending against threats like Russia’s Putin.
Farage’s attempt to portray himself as a savior from a crisis he contributed to is seen as deceitful. As a prominent figure in the Brexit campaign, he promised border control but instead, Britain lost key protections under the Dublin Convention, leading to a surge in small boat crossings from 299 in 2018 to over 45,000 by 2022. Farage’s role in dismantling the system and shifting blame onto others is evident, with taxpayers now expected to foot the bill for his failed policies.
Reform’s supporters, particularly from the working class, deserve transparency and accountability from the party. They should not be underestimated or manipulated as electoral pawns, as seen in Reform’s dealings in Clacton. With ongoing investigations into the party’s leadership, questions about financial relationships, and acceptance of funds from foreign donors, voters are urged to consider the party’s track record. Farage’s promises of control resulted in chaos, and now Reform seeks support and funding from the very people affected by the repercussions of their actions.
