Silver Dollar City, a well-known theme park located in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, has announced the closure of its Thunderation roller coaster in January 2027. The park first opened its doors to visitors in 1966, situated between the towns of Branson and Branson West. Over the years, Silver Dollar City has expanded to offer more than 40 rides and seven roller coasters.
Introduced in 1993, the Thunderation roller coaster takes riders on a thrilling journey through a simulated 1880s mining experience, standing at a towering 80 feet and reaching speeds of 48 miles per hour. This attraction has become a favorite among park visitors. The final opportunity to experience the coaster will be on January 2, 2027.
While the theme park hints at upcoming new attractions as part of its development plans, the specific reasons for the roller coaster’s closure have not been officially disclosed. To commemorate the beloved ride, a range of memorabilia such as T-shirts, hats, and mugs are now available for purchase.
This news coincides with the closure of other popular theme parks across the United States, including Fun Spot America in Atlanta, Georgia, which originally opened as Dixieland Fun Park in 1990 and is set to close its doors for the last time on August 2.
