Britons planning to travel overseas this summer are being cautioned against purchasing potentially hazardous travel adaptors that could lead to electric shocks or even fatal electrocution.
A recent assessment by Electrical Safety First examined 14 travel adaptor models sourced from platforms like Ali Express, eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and TikTok Shop, revealing that all of them failed to meet basic safety standards. The charity raised concerns that over 10,000 of these unsafe adaptors might have already been sold to unsuspecting consumers.
During the testing, it was discovered that certain travel adaptors had multiple exposed plug pins simultaneously, posing a grave risk if touched with wet hands. Moreover, some adaptors exhibited issues such as plug pins breaking inside sockets, absence of safety features like shutters or fuses, and oversized plug pin holes that increased the likelihood of contact with live electrical components.
Giuseppe Capanna, a product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First, emphasized the importance of cautious purchasing habits, stating that holiday shopping should not endanger individuals. Capanna urged UK travelers to exercise vigilance and only buy travel adaptors from reputable sellers to ensure safety during their journeys.
Following the safety warnings, AliExpress, eBay, Amazon, and TikTok have taken action to remove the identified listings of unsafe travel adaptors from their platforms. Additionally, the UK Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson, Andrew McConnell, advised travelers to prioritize trusted products and adhere to safety guidelines when procuring electrical items for their trips.
By prioritizing safety and being mindful of the risks associated with substandard electrical products, travelers can reduce the likelihood of encountering potentially dangerous situations during their travels.
