Andy Burnham has made a heartfelt promise to revamp the struggling social care system to assist individuals like his father. The Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need for social care reform, citing the challenges faced by approximately 2 million people in England who are struggling to access necessary care and others depleting their savings to support their loved ones.
During a moving address at a Jewish Care facility in north London, Mr. Burnham shared touching moments about carers tending to his father, Roy, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. He expressed his disappointment that his father is unaware of his position as Prime Minister.
Addressing the long-standing neglect of the issue by politicians, Mr. Burnham criticized the numerous reviews conducted in the past 30 years without substantial action. He stressed the importance of tackling the social care crisis, comparing the current system in England to the inequities of American healthcare.
Proposing the establishment of a new national care service, Mr. Burnham highlighted the need for improved wages, training for care workers, and closer collaboration with the NHS to alleviate pressure on hospitals. He announced plans to expedite an independent review by Baroness Casey to next summer and engage the public in a national consultation on the desired social care system.
In efforts to garner cross-party support, Mr. Burnham initiated talks with the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats to find common ground on the longstanding social care issue. He acknowledged the historical challenges in funding social care, referencing previous proposals such as the “death tax” and the “dementia tax.”
While considering potential tax increases to finance social care, Mr. Burnham emphasized the importance of maximizing existing resources. He advocated for recognizing the vital role of carers and enhancing the status and conditions of the social care workforce.
