A tragic incident resulted in the death of a young girl who sustained severe injuries in a car accident that claimed the life of her mother. The girl, identified as nine-year-old Irena (Ira) Mereacre, had been hospitalized following the crash in County Cavan, Ireland. Her mother, Nell Raven, lost her life in the collision, and Irena succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday.
The accident, which occurred near the village of Shercock around 4:30 pm on Friday, involved a collision between the car driven by Ms. Raven, a 53-year-old English-born writer and journalist who had recently become an Irish citizen, and a flatbed van, as reported by the Irish Mirror.
Ms. Raven was pronounced dead at the scene, while her daughter was critically injured and transported to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin, where she later passed away.
Authorities, including the Gardai (Irish police), are investigating the fatal road traffic collision that took place on the R162 at Corclare, Shercock, Co. Cavan, on July 24, 2026. They have urged any witnesses with information about the crash, especially those in the area between 4:15 pm and 5:00 pm on the day of the incident, to come forward and provide any relevant camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, to assist in the investigation.
