An individual described as seeking attention brought weapons to a school and has been sentenced to a two-year jail term. Both Douk Deng, a 21-year-old South Sudanese national, was apprehended at Edgar Wood Academy in Heywood, Greater Manchester, last August after being confronted by workers. Prior to this, a member of the public alerted authorities about Deng’s suspicious behavior as he made his way to the school with a hammer and a petrol can. Deng was observed walking around the school premises, which were closed for the summer, before builders on site alerted the police.
CCTV footage released by Greater Manchester Police captured Deng causing minor disturbances on the school grounds before being confronted by the authorities. Deng, who was found with a hammer, a hatchet, a kitchen knife, and a jerry can of petrol, had also exhibited odd behavior at another school the day before.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Deng, an asylum seeker, felt neglected by immigration authorities regarding his status in the UK. His actions were deemed as a plea for attention rather than a violent intent. Despite his distressing circumstances, Deng’s actions were considered immature and lacking in hostility towards others.
Deng, who has a family, found himself in a foreign country with limited English skills and felt unheard in his desire to work and support his loved ones. The court heard that Deng had applied for asylum multiple times without success. The judge emphasized the need for authorities to address Deng’s situation given his failed asylum status and time spent in custody.
Police investigations found no specific motive behind Deng’s actions. Chief Superintendent Helen Caldbeck commended the officers’ response to the incident, noting their professionalism and bravery in ensuring public safety during a potentially dangerous situation.
