“DIY SOS Star Sian Astley Challenges Political Status Quo in Greater Manchester Mayoral Race”

Sian Astley, known for her appearances on DIY SOS and as a Reform UK candidate, is challenging the dominant political party in Greater Manchester, aiming to bring change to the region. Following Andy Burnham’s departure, the mayoral race is heating up as voters prepare to elect a new mayor on Thursday.

Astley is among seven contenders vying for the mayoral position, making this by-election the largest in UK history with over two million eligible voters. While Labour’s Bev Craig is predicted to lead in first preference votes according to recent YouGov polling, Astley is trailing behind in second place. Nevertheless, the outcome remains uncertain.

A familiar face on television, the 56-year-old Astley has a background in interior design and property, having appeared on various shows over the years. Despite starting her career in a different field after studying law, she eventually found her passion in the building industry and established her own property firm.

Although relatively new to politics, Astley has not shied away from controversy, particularly in her stance on immigration issues. She has emphasized the importance of border control and preventing illegal migrants from settling in towns, along with advocating for a strong police force and easing restrictions on drivers.

In an interview with the Telegraph, Astley likened her approach to running Greater Manchester to a home renovation project, suggesting that sometimes one must take a step back to make significant progress forward. Her manifesto includes promises to address various issues affecting the region, reflecting her vision for a revitalized and secure Greater Manchester.
