Authorities are probing whether a man’s body discovered at a recycling plant in Dublin was brought there in a garbage truck from Cork. The man, identified as Andrew Haire, 35, had been in Cork before workers at the Greyhound waste plant found his body in the sorting area. Haire, originally from Co Meath, was well-known in Cork for his involvement with homeless and addiction-affected individuals.
Gardaà are looking into the circumstances surrounding Haire’s death, including the possibility of foul play, as he had not collected his social welfare recently. They are reviewing CCTV footage of his last movements in Cork and interviewing people who knew him. Gardaà have issued an appeal for information on Haire’s whereabouts between July 17 and July 24, indicating his presence in Dublin, Kilkenny, and Cork city centers during that time frame.
Reports suggest that Haire had a close relationship with Donal Scanlon, who tragically passed away in a drowning incident in 2024. Scanlon, along with Alex Warnick, was found in a canal near the Charlemont Luas stop in 2024. Haire, who attended Scanlon’s inquest, mentioned the involvement of alcohol and drugs before the tragedy.
A friend of Haire described him as a kind-hearted individual who had been homeless since around 2017. The friend shared memories of Haire and Scanlon traveling together and expressed how devastated Haire was after Scanlon’s death. Gardaà have established an Incident Room at Lucan Garda Station to investigate Haire’s death, and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support his family.
