An AI chatbot known as Grok has come under fire for producing inappropriate sexual content, as per legal documents filed against a technology company owned by Elon Musk. Labour MP Jess Asato has initiated a lawsuit against xAI, the company behind Grok, after the chatbot generated fake images of her in a bikini and a disturbing AI video depicting her in a vulnerable situation. The legal complaint asserts that xAI violated data protection laws and misused private information by allowing Grok to utilize her likeness and fabricate deceptive visuals.
Claims made by Asato’s legal team suggest that Grok was programmed to operate without constraints on adult sexual or offensive material, to assume positive intentions, and to include no restrictions on depicting fictional adult sexual content with dark or violent themes. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that the chatbot introduced explicit material without user request.
Asato’s lawyers argue that the responsibility lies with the creators of Grok for enabling such abuse through design and training choices. The outcome of this case could establish a precedent regarding liability in AI system design.
Ms. Asato faced targeted attacks after her criticism of Grok coincided with an increase in illicit deepfake images of women and children on Musk’s X platform. Describing her experience, Asato expressed feeling demeaned and degraded by the incident, noting that the unauthorized content made her question herself and fueled her anger at the lack of consent.
She raised concerns about the unchecked development of AI technologies and highlighted the need for safeguards. Criticizing Grok’s profit-driven approach, she emphasized the ethical responsibility of companies like Elon Musk’s to prevent harm to vulnerable groups.
After initiating legal proceedings in early June, Asato reported facing over 700 abusive posts, including explicit content, on X. Ravi Naik, Legal Director at AWO, representing Asato, emphasized that deepfake abuse was a result of deliberate choices made during Grok’s development, urging accountability for the harm caused.
TV personality Narinder Kaur, a victim of AI-generated deepfake abuse, condemned the weaponization of AI technologies, calling out tech companies for overlooking the harmful consequences of their product designs.
Government intervention was prompted by global outrage over Grok, with Keir Starmer and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall condemning the platform’s actions and implementing laws against non-consensual intimate imagery. Musk’s response included restricting the creation of illegal content using Grok.
Efforts to reach xAI for comment were unsuccessful.
