Two British individuals lost their lives when the railing on their hotel balcony collapsed in Lanzarote, as revealed by an inquest. Darren Silcox, aged 56, and Nicholas Thomas, aged 54, both hailing from Cwmbran, Wales, tragically fell from a balcony at an apartment complex in the Canary Islands. The incident occurred in October 2025 when Darren, a shop owner, and his friend Nicholas fell from the balcony during the early hours of the morning while vacationing at the Galeon Playa Apartments.
The pair fell into the atrium stairwell in the town of Costa Teguise at 1:30 am after a night out. Darren, a father of two, succumbed to his injuries two hours after the fall, while Nicholas was airlifted back to the UK for medical treatment. Unfortunately, Nicholas passed away nearly ten months later on July 10 after being transferred to University Hospital in Llandough.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been initiated by Spain’s Civil Guard, according to reports from Wales Online. Authorities are examining whether inadequate maintenance or lack of safety measures played a role in the tragic accident.
Emergency services responded to the scene at the holiday apartments around 1:30 am following the fall. Medical personnel confirmed that the 56-year-old man had died due to injuries sustained in the fall. In a subsequent inquest into Mr. Thomas’ death, Gwent coroner Rose Farmer disclosed that he fell approximately 15-22 feet after a wooden railing collapsed.
Mr. Thomas received initial treatment at Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital on the island before being repatriated to the UK in late November. A previous inquest into Mr. Silcox’s death revealed that he suffered a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and skull lacerations.
The proceedings have been postponed until April 14 of the following year, with expectations of a joint inquest taking place.
