A group of 11 European tourists aboard a speedboat has gone missing in a popular holiday destination in Indonesia. The vessel disappeared off Sulawesi island after departing from Tojo Unauna regency in Central Sulawesi province en route to Marisa Port in Gorontalo province. Search and rescue teams were alerted to the situation when the boat failed to reach its destination as scheduled on Friday.
Authorities initiated an immediate search operation upon receiving the report from a local tour guide. Despite efforts, there have been no signs of the missing speedboat or its passengers. Challenging sea conditions, including high waves caused by strong winds, have complicated the search efforts.
The tourists on the speedboat included individuals from Czech Republic, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, and France, as well as Indonesian crew members. Embassy representatives for the missing tourists have not yet provided a statement on the situation.
Search and rescue teams have mobilized a large-scale operation covering approximately 300 square nautical miles in and around Tomini Bay, known for its marine attractions. Thermal-imaging drones and diving equipment are also being utilized in the search efforts.
Indonesia, an archipelago with thousands of islands, relies heavily on boats for transportation, leading to frequent maritime accidents due to safety shortcomings, overloading, and unpredictable weather conditions. Just recently, a passenger boat incident off Selayar Island resulted in casualties and missing persons, underscoring the risks associated with sea travel in the region.
