Weight loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro could potentially reduce the need for hospitalization among individuals struggling with alcohol dependence, according to new research. A study involving 41,000 users revealed that those on these appetite-suppressing drugs were significantly less likely to require hospital admission. Researchers are considering the possibility of using these drugs as a treatment for addiction.
The study focused on individuals who had recently started taking Wegovy, Ozempic, or Mounjaro between January 2018 and December 2024. Dr. Hemalkumar Mehta, from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, US, highlighted the potential role of GLP-1 receptor agonists in addressing alcohol-use disorder based on the study’s findings.
Prior studies have also indicated that these medications may help reduce alcohol cravings and lead to decreased alcohol consumption in one sitting. These weight loss drugs function by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, promoting a sense of fullness and regulating blood sugar levels. While Wegovy is used for obesity and Ozempic for diabetes, the analysis revealed that GLP-1 drugs substantially lowered the risk of alcohol-related hospital admissions compared to other diabetes and obesity medications.
The data showed a notable decrease in alcohol-related hospital admissions among individuals with alcohol issues who were using weight loss injections. Specifically, the risk was reduced by 63% and 65% for type 2 diabetics and obese individuals with alcohol problems, respectively.
Recent statistics indicate over one million alcohol-related hospital admissions in England during 2023/24. Furthermore, studies have suggested that beyond weight loss benefits, GLP-1 drugs could potentially offer various health advantages, including combating inflammation in multiple organ systems and addressing conditions ranging from heart disease to addiction and mental health issues.
Despite their potential benefits, these medications can lead to side effects like vomiting and require ongoing personalized support to maintain weight loss. Experts, while acknowledging the promising implications of the research, emphasize the need for further studies to fully understand the role of GLP-1 medications in assisting individuals with alcohol-related issues.
