Thomas Tuchel may face FIFA sanctions after the 2026 World Cup for publicly criticizing match officials. Several officials have been under fire from players and managers during the tournament for contentious decisions.
In an effort to maintain the integrity of the game, sources close to World Football have suggested that action could be taken following this summer’s event. A report from The Athletic indicates that any sanctions will be based on referee reports and other relevant factors.
Tuchel expressed his discontent after England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the round of 16, where Jarell Quansah received a straight red card. Criticizing referee Alireza Faghani, Tuchel remarked that the officiating was inconsistent and unreliable.
While the Premier League typically issues touchline bans and fines to outspoken managers, FIFA is expected to defer its decision until after the tournament concludes.
Tuchel was particularly frustrated by Quansah’s red card as England has faced challenges in the right-back position throughout the World Cup. Adjusting quickly, Tuchel had to make tactical changes for future matches due to Quansah’s absence.
Meanwhile, fans have questioned the delayed suspension of Folarin Balogun compared to Quansah and others. Balogun’s one-game suspension was postponed by a year by an independent committee, following intervention from the White House challenging the initial ban.
Looking ahead, England will face Argentina in Atlanta, Georgia, with the winner advancing to play Spain in the final. The semi-final match is highly anticipated and will determine the contender for the World Cup title.
