“UK Advised to Avoid Barbecues Amid Severe Wildfires”

Britons are being advised against hosting barbecues or lighting bonfires due to a series of severe wildfires. The United Kingdom has witnessed as many scorching 30C days in 2026 as during the notorious 1976 heatwave, according to the Met Office. While many are relishing the sunny weather with outdoor gatherings, the prolonged dry spell has led to highly flammable vegetation, fueling numerous wildfires across the country.

Temperatures soared to 30.1C in Hurn, Dorset, on Monday, marking the ninth consecutive day with temperatures exceeding 30C in various parts of the UK. The recent heatwave has prompted yellow heat-health alerts in seven English regions issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

In response to the escalating wildfires, fire and rescue teams have been working tirelessly. In North Wales, near Capelulo village, residents were evacuated as firefighters battled a blaze at Conwy Mountain. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s group manager, Matt Rowe, highlighted that careless disposal of cigarettes or barbecues is the primary cause of the recent wildfires in their area.

The dry and windy conditions have exacerbated the wildfire risk, with over 60 firefighters mobilized to combat a wildfire in Blackwater, Hampshire. Authorities are urging the public to refrain from bonfires and to exercise caution when using barbecues, advising to have water nearby. Additionally, the National Fire Chiefs Council chairman, Phil Garrigan, emphasized the importance of preventing wildfires during hot weather, warning of the rapid spread and extensive damage they can cause.

As the heatwave persists, the Met Office forecasts temperatures to peak at around 33C in parts of southern-central England on Wednesday. However, temperatures are expected to moderate towards the weekend, dropping to the mid to high-20s. It is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent wildfires and protect the environment and communities.
