Police in South Wales have provided an update following an incident where a man, reportedly armed with a crossbow, was shot by officers due to alleged threatening behavior. The individual was discovered with the weapon after law enforcement responded to a call at a residence on St Edward Street late on Friday, July 10, according to Gwent Police.
The 21-year-old suspect was shot by officers using an official police firearm and subsequently received medical attention before being transported to a hospital. As per the latest report, the man is said to be in stable condition. A referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been initiated in relation to the shooting.
The man, a resident of Newport, has been arrested on suspicion of affray, threats to kill, and possessing an offensive weapon. He is presently detained by the police at the hospital while investigations are ongoing.
Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain sought to allay public concerns, stating that the incident was isolated with no continuing threat. He emphasized the rarity of firearms and weapons-related reports in Gwent and assured that such matters are treated with utmost seriousness and addressed proportionately by highly trained firearms officers.
McLain highlighted that the discharge of a police firearm is a measure of last resort and is executed only when there is a significant risk to officers, the individual involved, or the public. He praised the professionalism of the firearms unit members who operate under immense pressure, often having to make split-second decisions.
Individuals with any pertinent information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, are urged to contact the police by referencing log number 2600220612. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously with Crimestoppers.
