“Digital Passenger Cards Replace Paper Forms in Australia”

Britons and other travelers visiting a popular destination will no longer need to complete physical passenger cards upon arrival. Instead, passengers arriving at Australian airports will now fill out digital cards, which are mandatory for both visitors and residents entering the country.

Over 450,000 passengers have already tested the digital-only cards on Qantas flights landing in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane since October 2024. The initiative is set to expand to Qantas flights arriving in Perth and Adelaide by the end of 2026 and will eventually be implemented at all international airports and seaports within the next 12 to 18 months.

Initially accessible via a webpage, the digital form is expected to be enhanced with in-app functionalities through collaboration with industry partners. The government reported positive feedback from the trial, indicating “significant success.”

Tourism Minister Don Farrell expressed that simplifying the arrival process will allow visitors to spend more time enjoying Australia’s attractions rather than filling out forms. This advancement aims to enhance the visitor experience and support the tourism industry in Australia.

The implementation of the new system will be funded through a $56.1 million investment over four years. It is designed to streamline passenger processing, enable pre-arrival data collection, and improve data accuracy for risk assessment purposes. Additionally, the system will facilitate updates and management of global risks like biosecurity outbreaks.

According to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, the modernization of border processes is crucial for Australia’s prosperity and national security. The seamless integration of digital border processes into everyday life will benefit both visitors and Australian travelers.

The funding for this program is also expected to enhance airport and cruise departure procedures, particularly with the anticipated increase in travelers ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
