Tourists have had to evacuate their lodgings as a fierce wildfire menaces a popular vacation destination. In Portugal, Greece, and Spain, hundreds of firefighters are combatting wildfires amidst extreme weather conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40C in recent weeks across the continent.
Dramatic visuals depict dense smoke from fires looming behind a swimming pool in Grazalema, Cádiz, prompting the evacuation of Hotel Fuerte and nearby residences. Footage from the region captures fire crews battling flames in El Alamillo, situated in the Sierra de Grazalema mountain range, where helicopters and planes have been deployed to assist in firefighting efforts.
Just five months ago, individuals were forced to vacate accommodations in Grazalema due to the threat of landslides triggered by unprecedented rainfall from Storm Leonardo. Now, nearly 200 individuals were instructed to leave their homes due to forest fires in the natural park.
Grazalema, a favored village among tourists for hiking and outdoor pursuits, has been significantly impacted. The Andalusian Forest Fire Prevention and Extinction Service has been diligently working to contain the blaze, which affected a 200-hectare area and has now been brought under control.
Antonio Sanz, the regional minister of Andalucia, stated that the situation has improved, with no active flames currently, only smoldering areas. However, there is a risk of the fires reigniting, necessitating precision actions to target lingering heat zones using aircraft. The cause of the fire, which consumed an ecologically important oak forest, is currently under investigation, with fire crews committed to remaining in the area until full containment and extinguishment are achieved.
In a message from the Andalusian Forest Fire Prevention and Extinction Service, it was noted that reconnaissance flights and operational assessments were ongoing to monitor the fire’s status in the El Alamillo area.
Meanwhile, in Thessaloniki, Greece, residents were advised to stay indoors and close windows due to toxic smoke emanating from a burning recycling plant engulfed by a wildfire. Another significant wildfire erupted west of Athens, with extensive firefighting efforts deployed to combat the blaze burning through pine forests in the Mandra area.
In Spain, a wildfire that erupted in the northeastern Girona region and charred nearly 2,200 hectares was successfully contained after intense firefighting operations.
