Ukrainian forces have initiated a significant drone attack on Moscow, marking their most extensive assault in two years. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the determination to achieve victory for Kyiv in the conflict. Over 430 drones were deployed targeting the Moscow region, with 36 directed at the capital, leading to widespread disruptions. Simultaneously, Ukrainian troops inflicted damage on Russian positions. The drone teams from Ukraine also successfully destroyed eight of Moscow’s illicit oil tankers at sea.
In a night of intense operations, a ferry and cargo ship connecting the mainland to Crimea were also destroyed. President Vladimir Putin faces mounting pressure due to difficulties in financing his invasion. Zelensky expressed confidence in Ukraine’s air capabilities, stating that victory in the war will depend on strategic intelligence. The frontline drones commander, Robert Brovdi, highlighted the successful strikes on Russian tankers, underscoring Ukraine’s determination to stand against Moscow.
Although a number of Ukrainian drones were intercepted en route to Moscow, the falling debris caused significant damage. This development poses a challenge for Putin, whose actions in Ukraine are facing growing opposition due to fuel shortages. The large-scale assault on Russian targets by Ukraine coincided with a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, resulting in casualties. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister, Oleksiy Kuleba, defended the attacks as essential to destabilizing Putin’s financial resources for the war.
Kuleba raised concerns about the activities of Russian vessels supporting the war effort, emphasizing their critical role in generating revenue for Russia. Zelensky is expected to request additional anti-ballistic missile support at the NATO summit in Turkey to counter Russian attacks. The summit will also provide an opportunity for Zelensky to engage with world leaders like Donald Trump and highlight Putin’s vulnerabilities in the conflict.
The ongoing lack of progress in Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine has left Putin exposed to criticism. Zelensky urged European allies to provide Patriot missiles to help protect civilians in Ukraine. The scarcity of Patriot systems globally raises doubts about their effectiveness in countering potential escalations by Russia. The impact of Ukraine’s counterattacks is evident in Moscow’s response, accusing Kyiv of terrorism for targeting its oil refineries with drones.
