A tragic incident occurred in southern Spain where a Moroccan fan lost her life in a freak accident while celebrating her country’s victory over Canada in the World Cup. The 39-year-old woman, wearing a flag around her neck, was riding on a motorcycle with her husband in Algeciras when the flag got entangled in the bike’s wheel, causing a fatal neck injury.
Following Morocco’s advancement to the quarter-finals, witnesses reported the accident to the police. Despite efforts to revive her with CPR, the woman succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at Punta Europa Hospital. Her husband, who was driving the motorcycle, tested negative for alcohol consumption.
The city’s mayor expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and extended support to the bereaved family. Algeciras, known for its significant Moroccan community, has been deeply affected by the loss of one of its residents.
This unfortunate event echoes a similar incident in December 2022, where an Argentinian fan lost his life in a comparable accident during celebrations for Argentina’s World Cup win. Sebastian Oscar Maciel, 22, tragically died in Bahia Blanca after his flag became entangled in his motorcycle wheel, leading to immediate asphyxiation.
Authorities are investigating both incidents to understand the circumstances surrounding these devastating accidents, highlighting the need for caution and safety during celebratory events.
