A dedicated father focused on fitness stumbled upon a diagnosis of renal cancer during a routine blood test while preparing for a major fitness event. David Ruttledge, hailing from Dublin, Ireland, learned of the alarming news as he geared up for a TRYKA relay earlier this year. Initial tests in October showed abnormal kidney markers, prompting further investigation. Subsequent results confirmed elevated levels, leading to an ultrasound to delve deeper into the issue.
Concurrently, David was engaged in the fitness challenge with his wife Carmel, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law. Despite the setback, he persevered and has since raised significant funds for the Irish Kidney Association, with plans to continue his charitable efforts.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the 43-year-old recounted his journey from the shocking ultrasound results to the eventual diagnosis of renal cancer with a sizable tumor on his left kidney. Following a series of medical appointments, scans, and tests, David underwent a successful partial nephrectomy on March 3. The surgical team effectively removed the tumor while preserving a portion of his kidney.
Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from his family and friends, David emphasized the importance of early detection and the exceptional care he received throughout his treatment. Inspired by his recovery, he is set to participate in another TRYKA event to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to his heart.
David affirmed that the upcoming challenge signifies more than physical fitness post-cancer; it symbolizes hope, resilience, and solidarity with others facing similar battles. He encourages support for his cause, emphasizing that every contribution and message of encouragement makes a difference. To date, he has amassed nearly €8,000 in donations, with opportunities for further contributions available through a designated fundraising link.
David’s story serves as a testament to the power of community, positivity, and determination in overcoming adversity.
