A tragic incident unfolded as one individual lost their life, while two others are in critical condition after a suspected deliberate housefire overnight. The emergency response team swiftly reacted to reports of a residential fire at Hope Island on Australia’s Gold Coast. Upon arriving at the scene on Sickle Avenue just after 11:30 pm local time on Tuesday, firefighters encountered a fully engulfed home.
The intense blaze caused extensive damage to the house, leading to a partial collapse of one side of the structure. Video footage captured flames and smoke billowing from the roof, with fire crews managing to bring the situation under control within an hour despite the rapid spread.
Tragically, a 38-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other men aged 44 and 84 were rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in critical conditions with severe burns to multiple parts of their bodies. A 59-year-old woman was also taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in stable condition with injuries to her back, hip, and leg, while a 38-year-old man managed to escape unharmed.
Authorities suspect the fire to be a deliberate act of arson, with the deceased man believed to be the perpetrator. The incident is under investigation by police and fire officials who have cordoned off the area as a crime scene.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported seeing police presence and smoke near the location in the early hours of the morning, with one resident mentioning hearing distressing noises coming from the house in the days leading up to the incident.
Another local resident who assisted the victims after they escaped the burning home described them as visibly shaken and confused, having emerged from the house in a state of undress. Queensland Police are urging anyone with information or relevant footage of the area to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation.
