“Courier Fraud Targets Elderly, Financial Losses Surge”

Elderly individuals are increasingly falling victim to a malicious scheme known as courier fraud. This scam often starts with an unexpected phone call from someone claiming to be either a police officer or a representative from the victim’s bank. The fraudsters manipulate the victims by posing as authorities warning them of potential fraud risks, then requesting assistance in catching the supposed culprits. In some cases, the criminals have even gone as far as showing up at the victims’ residences with counterfeit identification cards.

The aim of the scammers is to gain the trust of their victims to the point where they agree to withdraw funds, make purchases, or disclose sensitive information. The ‘courier’ aspect of the fraud comes into play when an individual arrives to collect the money or items, only to disappear without a trace.

Reports from Report Fraud indicate a nearly 10% increase in incidents of courier fraud from 1,721 cases in 2024 to 1,891 cases in 2025. The financial losses also surged from £19.5 million to over £21 million during the same period. Notably, older individuals, particularly those aged 70 and above, are disproportionately targeted by this deceitful practice.

This scam is part of a broader trend of fraud schemes where fraudsters employ various tactics to deceive their victims. Recently, Santander raised concerns about a Father’s Day scam that involved impersonating family members to extort money through communication channels like WhatsApp, text messages, or AI-generated phone calls.

Fraudsters often exploit major events such as the World Cup and concerts to defraud unsuspecting individuals. Britons lost more than £10.8 million to ticket fraud in the past year alone, as scammers preyed on eager fans seeking tickets for entertainment events. Ticket fraud commonly entails the sale of fake, duplicated, or non-existent tickets, leaving buyers with financial losses and no access to the events.

A recent report by UK Finance revealed that criminals siphoned off nearly £1.3 billion through payment fraud in 2025, marking a 4% increase from the previous year. The report emphasized the pervasive nature of fraud activities, describing them as a significant national security threat.

To protect against courier fraud and ticket scams, individuals should remain vigilant and cautious when receiving unsolicited communications or offers that seem too good to be true. It is crucial to verify the authenticity of any requests for money or sensitive information before taking any action.
