UK Braces for Historic Heatwave, 42C Forecasted

Record-breaking temperatures are on the horizon in the UK this week, with forecasts indicating a possible peak of 42C, surpassing the current highest recorded temperature of 40.3C during the July 2022 heatwave. The Met Office has issued rare amber and red weather warnings across England and Wales, cautioning that temperatures could soar up to 40C on Wednesday and Thursday. The UKHSA has also issued red heat health alerts, highlighting the severe impact of the impending heatwave on the population.

Data from the UKV weather model suggests temperatures could reach 40C in the south-west of England on Wednesday, with highs in the high 30s expected across southern, central, and eastern England. Thursday could bring even hotter conditions, with the possibility of hitting 42C in the north-west, eastern England, South Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, potentially setting a new all-time temperature record.

The maps indicate that more than 20 counties could experience temperatures of 40C or above, particularly in central England, some northern regions, and the south-west. The Met Office warns of extremely humid conditions accompanying the heatwave, with dew points forecasted to reach around 22C, significantly higher than during the previous record-breaking July 2022 heatwave.

Moreover, widespread ‘Tropical Nights’ are anticipated, with overnight temperatures unlikely to drop below 20C in southern parts of England, especially in urban areas. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 37C today, possibly peaking at 40C on Wednesday and Thursday. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Mark Sidaway emphasized the severity of the heatwave, stressing the potential health impacts on a broad range of individuals due to the high temperatures and humidity levels.
