Prince William has made a generous donation of £1,000 to support a local initiative aimed at saving a community pub. The Duke of Cambridge provided the funds to the Semington Community Benefit Society, which is working towards reopening the Somerset Arms, a historic pub near Melksham in Wiltshire that has been closed since 2023 and is currently up for sale at £395,000.
In a letter accompanying his contribution, Prince William emphasized the vital role that rural pubs play as essential community assets. Andy Cobley, the vice chair of the Semington Community Benefit Society, expressed gratitude for the Prince’s backing, noting the overwhelming response from local residents.
The Society was thrilled by Prince William’s donation and his understanding of the significance of pubs within local communities. They extended an invitation to the future king to pour the inaugural pint at the Somerset Arms should the pub be successfully revived.
Echoing his previous advocacy for preserving local pubs, Prince William reiterated his support for these establishments as crucial community hubs during a recent engagement at The Prince of Peckham pub in South London. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding and cherishing Britain’s pubs, calling them essential gathering places for communities.
During his visit to The Prince of Peckham, Prince William interacted with patrons, highlighting the role of pubs as community anchors where people come together. He also participated in pulling a pint and shared jovial moments with the pub’s owner, emphasizing the significance of family-run establishments in fostering a sense of community.
