Ukraine has carried out a significant cross-border assault into Russia, targeting Moscow’s largest oil refinery and critical military sites. The drone strikes, launched in the early hours, are expected to have a major impact on Russia’s energy industry and disrupt the capital’s supply chain.
The attack coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit in France to discuss a potential peace agreement. President Zelensky described the mission as a response to Russian aggression towards Ukrainian civilians, emphasizing the need for Russia to end the ongoing conflict.
Following the assault on Moscow’s energy infrastructure, Russian authorities imposed restrictions on petrol purchases and mandated cash-only transactions at petrol stations, limiting individual car owners to 30 liters of fuel. The targeted oil refinery in Moscow supplies nearly half of the city’s daily oil requirements, with a portion diverted for Kremlin’s military operations in Ukraine.
In addition to the refinery attack, an oil facility in Krasnodar, southern Russia, was also struck, aiming to undermine President Putin’s authority amid rising discontent. The assault targeted Russian troops stationed at various observation centers and command posts across the country, orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence operatives.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone teams attacked Russian military positions in Donetsk, targeting key installations. Ukrainian forces also engaged Russian troops in the Ivanovo region of Bryansk, further challenging Putin’s military capabilities and financial resources in sustaining the conflict. This operation follows recent actions, including the interception of a Russian oil vessel by British commandos in the Channel.
As international pressure mounts for a resolution to the prolonged conflict, Ukraine’s latest offensive marks a significant setback for Putin’s military campaign in Ukraine. The attack signifies a strategic escalation in Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russian aggression and bring an end to the four-year conflict.
