“Mauritius Implements Strict Ebola Protocols for Travelers”

Travelers heading to popular vacation spots should review the most recent entry requirements before embarking on their journey. Mauritius has implemented stringent new protocols in response to concerns about an Ebola outbreak. Some visitors now face a compulsory 21-day quarantine, while others are prohibited from entering altogether.

These changes were outlined in updated travel advisories from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), following an announcement by the Mauritian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 15. Non-Mauritian nationals who have recently been in or transited through the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan will not be permitted entry to Mauritius unless they meet specific conditions such as possessing a valid work permit, residence permit, business visa, or student visa.

On the other hand, Mauritian citizens and eligible foreign nationals who have visited the aforementioned countries within the past 21 days can still enter Mauritius but must undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine upon arrival. These updated regulations are detailed in the FCDO’s Mauritius travel advice.

Travelers may also be subject to additional health screenings and checks based on their recent travel history, as advised by Mauritian authorities. The restrictions are currently in effect until further notice, as stated in Mauritius Airport’s official travel advisory.

Ebola is a rare yet severe viral disease that can be fatal if not promptly treated. Symptoms may include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, and, in some cases, internal and external bleeding. The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or materials and not through the air like common respiratory viruses.

Mauritius remains open to most international visitors, including British tourists traveling directly from the UK. However, the latest restrictions specifically target individuals who have recently been in or transited through the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan.

Prior to travel, the FCDO recommends that vacationers verify the latest entry requirements with their airline and stay updated on official government guidelines, as regulations can change unexpectedly.
