Worker Crushed by Elevator Counterweight in Fatal Osaka Accident

A tragic incident occurred at a site designated for demolition in Osaka, Japan, where a worker lost his life after being crushed by a loose counterweight connected to an elevator. The emergency response was prompted by reports of the elevator falling on the 62-year-old worker at the former Sharp Sakai Plant this morning.

The emergency crews, including firefighters and police, rushed to the scene following the distress call. Although initial reports suggested that the lift had fallen on the worker, it was discovered that the counterweight, weighing approximately 10 tonnes, had detached and caused the fatal accident. Counterweights in elevators are designed to balance the lift car’s weight.

The unfortunate incident took place during demolition work at the site, where teams were dismantling the lift system. The worker, a contractor hired for the demolition project and not directly employed by Sharp, was already deceased when rescue personnel reached him. The former Sharp Sakai Plant, previously a production facility for LCD panels, is currently undergoing demolition for future redevelopment.

Fire officials mentioned a suspected break in the chain connecting the lift car to the counterweight as a potential cause of the accident. An investigation into the tragic event has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances leading to the worker’s death.
