“UK Approves First GLP-1 Weight Loss Pill: Wegovy Tablet”

British authorities have approved the first GLP-1 weight loss pill in the UK. The newly authorized Wegovy (semaglutide) tablet, designed for obese adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, can also be prescribed to overweight individuals with conditions like high blood pressure.

This medication, when used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, aims to assist obese and overweight adults in managing their weight. The initial dosage of the tablet starts at 1.5mg, gradually increasing to 4mg, 9mg, and finally to 25mg, with a mandatory one-month interval between dose increments.

Patients who are currently undergoing private treatment with a 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can transition directly to a daily intake of 25mg tablets, as confirmed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Although the drug is now available on prescription and will soon be accessible privately, its NHS usage has not been evaluated yet. According to Julian Beach, the executive director of healthcare quality and access at the MHRA, the semaglutide tablet has met the strict safety, quality, and effectiveness criteria set by the MHRA for weight loss and management.

The Wegovy tablet, developed by Novo Nordisk, should be swallowed whole on an empty stomach with a small amount of water following an eight-hour fasting period. It is crucial not to consume any food or drink for at least 30 minutes after ingestion to ensure optimal absorption of the drug.

The MHRA’s approval was based on a study where adults taking 25mg of the pill daily, in combination with diet and exercise, experienced an average weight loss of 17% after 64 weeks, compared to just 3% for those on a placebo. The most common side effects reported were gastrointestinal, including nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting.

By mimicking the actions of GLP-1 in the body post-meal, this tablet, containing semaglutide, targets specific brain areas that regulate appetite, promoting a feeling of fullness and reducing cravings.

Sebnem Avsar Tuna, the general manager at Novo Nordisk, hailed the approval of the daily Wegovy pill as a significant step forward in obesity care in the UK. Meanwhile, Professor Naveed Sattar from the University of Glasgow welcomed the availability of the oral form of Wegovy, emphasizing the importance of expanding treatment options in combating obesity in the UK.

James O’Loan, the chief executive of Chemist4U, highlighted the potential game-changing impact of oral weight loss medications for UK patients. The anticipated launch of the Wegovy pill has already garnered substantial interest, with over 10,000 individuals expressing willingness to join consultation waiting lists.

As demand for weight loss pills is expected to surge in the upcoming months, the introduction of an oral option like Wegovy is predicted to broaden access to millions of individuals, particularly those who prefer a non-injection method for weight management.
