Fierce clashes have erupted in southern Lebanon between Israeli forces and Hezbollah despite reports of a potential ceasefire. Tensions escalated following allegations that US President Donald Trump engaged in a heated phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The discord reportedly stemmed from Israel’s intention to resume attacks on Beirut, leading Iran to suspend peace talks. During the contentious call, Trump reportedly cautioned Netanyahu that further assaults on Lebanon could isolate Israel and derail peace negotiations.
Israeli drone strikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, including a father and his two children, just a day after Trump’s ceasefire announcement. The threat of Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs prompted panic in the Lebanese capital, with thousands fleeing to safer areas while Hezbollah retaliated by launching rockets at northern Israel.
Iran’s lead negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, issued a stern warning, stating that if Israel’s aggression against Lebanon persisted, Tehran would not only halt negotiations but also engage in direct confrontation. The situation further escalated as rockets targeted northern Israel overnight, sparking clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah’s ground forces in southern Lebanon.
An apparent rift between Netanyahu and Trump over Israel’s escalating attacks on Beirut further complicated the situation. Tehran insisted that any ceasefire agreement must include Lebanon and cautioned of potential attacks on northern Israel if Beirut faced renewed strikes.
President Trump, announcing a cessation of hostilities, claimed that both sides had agreed to halt all shooting. However, tensions remain high as Netanyahu threatened to proceed with the Beirut operation if Hezbollah continued targeting Israeli civilians.
Despite Iran’s warning of potential withdrawal from negotiations due to Israeli military actions in Lebanon, Hezbollah targeted Israeli tanks overnight. Concerns grow over the breakdown of peace talks and the resumption of conflict, with fears of Tehran mobilizing its Houthi allies in Yemen.
The possible involvement of the Houthis in Yemen could jeopardize the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical maritime route connecting the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. The strait facilitates a significant portion of global maritime trade and petroleum supply, underscoring its strategic importance in international commerce.
Lebanon became embroiled in the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran after Hezbollah’s retaliatory rocket attacks on Israel in response to the killing of Iran’s supreme leader by Israeli forces. The violence has escalated, with a rising death toll in Lebanon and casualties on both sides of the border.
