“London Mayor Backs Social Media Ban for Under-16s”

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is set to endorse a proposal for a social media ban for individuals under 16, citing it as necessary to address current harms. The call for this action is gaining momentum, urging the UK government to consider raising the age limit for accessing platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram, following in the footsteps of Australia.

During a speech in London today, Sir Sadiq is expected to argue that social media companies should demonstrate the safety of their platforms, similar to other industries, before allowing access to minors. He emphasizes that until these platforms can ensure safety for young users, a ban is crucial to mitigate existing risks.

However, Sir Sadiq also highlights that a ban alone is insufficient in addressing all issues, suggesting a need to rethink the approach to social media. He advocates for platforms that prioritize people over profits and minimize the negative impacts of online interactions.

At the SXSW London event, the Mayor will unveil a £1 million initiative to support boys and young men in London, cautioning against the dangers of online misogyny. He calls on tech companies to address the spread of misogyny on their platforms and adjust algorithms to combat it, emphasizing the importance of taking action to protect users.

Additionally, he criticizes so-called manosphere influencers for promoting harmful content and urges for better engagement with young men on issues like toxic masculinity. The funding package includes support programs for fathers and the introduction of football mentors in communities across the capital.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has hinted at the government’s consideration of a social media ban for under-16s, following strong feedback from parents in an online safety consultation. Over 100,000 responses were received, with a majority of parents supporting the proposed ban. The consultation also explores other measures such as app restrictions and curfews to address online safety concerns.

While some advocate for a ban to enhance child safety, others caution that it may drive young users to unregulated online spaces. There are calls for tech companies to enhance platform safety rather than relying solely on bans to protect users.
