An unfortunate incident occurred on the westbound carriageway of the A30 in Cornwall near Connor Downs, resulting in the tragic death of an eight-year-old boy and leaving a five-year-old boy in critical condition in a hospital.
The emergency services responded to the scene just before 11 am on Friday following a multi-vehicle crash. The police confirmed the death of the eight-year-old boy at the scene, while the five-year-old boy was swiftly transported to Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical state.
In addition to the children, two women traveling in the same vehicle sustained injuries. A woman in her 70s suffered severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Derriford Hospital, while another woman in her 40s was treated for injuries at Derriford and has since been discharged.
A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Following treatment for minor injuries, he was released pending further investigation.
Detective Inspector Andy Heath from the Serious Collisions Investigation Team of Devon and Cornwall Police expressed condolences to those affected by the incident. He emphasized ongoing inquiries by the Roads Policing Team and the Serious Collisions Investigation Team, with multiple lines of investigation to be pursued in the upcoming weeks.
