Nicola Sturgeon was emotional as she shared her feelings regarding a gift presented to her by her estranged husband, who recently admitted to embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP.
The former Scottish First Minister expressed that she feels unjustly burdened by the situation, emphasizing that she will not take responsibility for her ex-husband’s unlawful actions. Sturgeon, who announced her divorce from Peter Murrell in January 2025, addressed the issue following his guilty plea for embezzlement.
Murrell, who served as the SNP chief executive from 2001 to 2023, spent the misappropriated funds on a variety of items, ranging from luxurious purchases like a motorhome, expensive watches, and pens, to more modest buys such as hand cream and kitchen staples. One notable expenditure included a pricey toilet seat, as detailed in a lengthy 125-page list.
During an interview on BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg show, Sturgeon asserted her stance, stating, “I will not apologize for someone else’s criminal actions, including those of my former husband. It is important for me, and for the many women who unfairly face blame for the deeds of men in their lives, that I do not perpetuate the notion that I am culpable for another person’s wrongdoings.”
She continued by reaffirming her commitment to being accountable for her own decisions and actions but made it clear that she cannot be held responsible for her ex-husband’s misconduct. Sturgeon also shared a poignant anecdote about a sentimental Shetland necklace gifted to her by Murrell, purchased with embezzled money, highlighting the conflicting emotions she experienced upon learning the truth.
Expressing deep disappointment and hurt, Sturgeon revealed the profound impact of her estranged husband’s actions on her personal and public life, emphasizing the distress and humiliation she has endured due to his deceit and betrayal.
