Obese military personnel are receiving weight loss injections to combat their excessive weight gain. Last year, 240 soldiers were administered Mounjaro and Wegovy injections to aid in shedding their extra pounds, a significant increase from the 73 individuals who received the injections in 2024.
The distribution of these specialized injections in 2024 included 128 army personnel, 58 individuals from the RAF, and 54 from the Navy. Of these recipients, 46 held officer positions, while the remaining 194 were enlisted personnel.
Data separately released by the Ministry of Defence reveals that a considerable number of military personnel fail their annual fitness assessments. Consequently, a few members are discharged annually due to obesity-related issues, with some weighing over 26 stone upon departure.
Moreover, there are numerous army personnel with waist measurements exceeding 55 inches, with a select few being granted access to liposuction treatments to address their weight concerns.
Official records indicate that over 11,000 soldiers, 4,300 sailors, and 3,900 aircrew members are classified as obese based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). Nevertheless, the military argues that BMI measurements may not accurately reflect the individuals’ physical condition, as many possess a higher muscle-to-fat ratio.
The medical records of military personnel indicate that nearly 6,000 service members were prescribed anti-depressants, while 2,500 received sleeping tablets last year. Additionally, 872 individuals were prescribed Viagra or similar medications, with the majority hailing from the army.
Former British Military Intelligence Colonel Philip Ingram commended the military’s use of various medical interventions to enhance the fitness levels of service members. He emphasized the cost-effectiveness of rehabilitating existing personnel compared to recruiting replacements.
In response to inquiries, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson highlighted the provision of lifestyle, dietary, and medical support to address obesity within the Armed Forces. Weight loss medications are considered on a case-by-case basis as part of comprehensive wellness programs, prioritizing the safety and well-being of military personnel.
