“Poverty Fueling NEET Crisis: Urgent Action Needed”

Poverty plays a significant role in the NEET crisis, according to the Milburn Review. Addressing this issue is crucial for resetting government solutions effectively.

A study in the British Medical Journal revealed that over half of NEET cases are linked to growing up in poverty. Young individuals who experienced persistent poverty and poor parental mental health during childhood were five times more likely to be NEET compared to those in less disadvantaged situations.

There is a concerning correlation between the increasing number of NEET individuals and the escalating levels of child poverty witnessed over the past two decades under various administrations.

Since 2022, there has been a notable surge of 18 to 24-year-olds selling the Big Issue, indicating a 60% increase. The combination of rising living costs and diminishing job opportunities is creating a challenging environment for today’s youth.

Alan Milburn warns of the potential for a “lost generation” if immediate action is not taken. This term minimizes the severity of the issue. The crisis is not something that will fade away quietly; it will become a prominent societal issue, leading to prolonged unemployment, increased welfare dependence, and a generational mental health crisis, negatively impacting both society and the economy.

The Big Issue was established 35 years ago to address a similar issue of individuals seeking employment opportunities but facing exclusion. This experience positions them well to contribute valuable insights to the current crisis.

One of the first steps in implementing Milburn’s proposed “system reset” is reforming the job center system. The existing checkbox approach lacks trust from both job seekers and employers. The Big Issue has been pioneering an alternative approach since 2022 through Big Issue Recruit, offering free support to individuals facing poverty, adversity, or other obstacles like disability.

Unlike traditional recruitment agencies, Big Issue Recruit provides candidates with personalized job coaching to boost confidence, develop workplace skills, and navigate the job market. The service also collaborates closely with employers to promote inclusive hiring practices and tap into a diverse talent pool that is often overlooked.

It is essential for the government to engage with businesses urgently to identify future economic opportunities. Innovative solutions tailored to the evolving economic landscape are necessary to address the challenges ahead.

As competition in the job market intensifies, individuals affected by poverty are at a higher risk of losing out. Recognizing that poverty is not just a consequence but a driving force behind the NEET crisis is crucial for any effective intervention. Confronting this reality is imperative now to avoid paying a steep economic and social price in the coming years.
