An elderly teacher, David James Clarke, has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for sexually abusing more than a dozen boys at Newlands Preparatory School in the late 1970s and 1980s. Clarke, 82, committed over 40 acts of child sexual abuse while working at the private school in East Sussex, with much of the abuse occurring in a dark room used for developing photographs.
During his trial at Brighton Crown Court, Clarke was found guilty of 36 counts of indecent assault, five counts of gross indecency with a child, and one count of buggery. The court heard how Clarke, a former religious education teacher, took advantage of the boys by isolating them in the dark room, where he would hug them, ask them to sit on his lap, and then proceed to carry out the abusive acts.
The prosecution emphasized that Clarke, in a position of authority and trust, exploited vulnerable children for his own gratification, using threats and bribes to manipulate and abuse them. The sentencing aims to send a strong message that those who sexually exploit children will be prosecuted, offering some comfort to the victims and their families.
Investigator Nicky Beard praised the bravery of the victims who came forward and encouraged others who may have been affected to speak out and seek justice. Authorities believe there may be more victims and urge anyone with information to come forward and report it.
The school where the abuse took place closed in 2014, and the sentencing of Clarke marks a significant step in holding perpetrators of child sexual abuse to account.
