A seismic event with a magnitude of 6.7 jolted the southern Andes Mountains in Peru, causing injuries to two individuals and destruction to residences, medical facilities, and educational institutions, as per authorities. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) pinpointed the quake’s epicenter to be 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho city in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region, with a depth of 66 kilometers, occurring at 1 p.m. local time. The tremor was widely felt in various regions of southern Peru, including Ica, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurimac, Cusco, and even Lima.
During the earthquake in Coracora, the capital of Parinacochas province, two people sustained injuries while evacuating their residences, as stated by Luis Vasquez, the Civil Defence chief. Authorities noted damages to 22 houses, six medical centers, and a school in multiple districts of Ayacucho and Cusco, encompassing Puquio, Pullo, Coracora, Upahuacho, San Pedro, and Pichari.
